“. . . The Monokrome Flute Quartet (a group Amelia co-founded and performed with from 2000-2004) . . . joined in for two works, appearing as special guests. Tacking on additional performers to this program added visceral excitement and some diversity to the evening. The players Brian Bensing, Laura Krebs, and Amelia Vitarelli, along with [Elena] Yarritu, all combined for an organically beautiful whole; they were a marvel to watch and to listen to. The group was stellar and chose stimulating repertoire. They played one of Jennifer Higdon’s pieces, a work called Steeley Pause, which, in actuality, has no such pause to offer to the players, who are in tireless pursuit of the work’s close. A relentless whirlwind of a raucous showpiece, the work’s stuttering, sputtering rhythms were mastered by the players. At the beginning, the flutists positioned themselves as if they were going into battle, and they won that battle, as they were totally prepared and banded together. Their other offering was a Quartet by Pierre Max Dubois. In this charming, post-impressionist work, intricacies were precise, and balances and colorations were clear. . . ”
